Warilla 2010

April 2010 Bowls World Cup
Held at Warilla, NSW, Australia.

Representing Cyprus...Linda Ryan and Malcolm Rowe

We arrived at Warilla on Tuesday 20th April.     Official practice day was the 21st April, with the first matches starting on the 22nd.

It should have been the biggest World Cup yet with a record amount of teams entering. However the problem with the volcano dust over Europe meant that 6 nations could not make it. We were both disappointed that World bowls decided to keep three groups as that meant we would both have less games to play than we first thought, however we were looking forward to the competition.

On Wednesday 21st we had to register our bowls and later that evening had the official opening parade of competitors . It was great to see all the different colour's and styles of kit. The junior event was being held at the same time, so this gave it an extra edge.

Linda got off to a flying start, winning her first game. I lost in a close game. I must say I was more nervous than I thought. I was OK once that game was out of the way. We both won our next matches and we were in good spirits and enjoying the whole experience. Three games in and Linda carried on her winning ways and was top of her group. I lost to Fiji, he blasted me off the rink when I thought I had the first set won ( a lesson well learnt ).

After that Linda and I both had very tough opposition and although playing well we found it difficult to progress.

My personal highlight was playing against the World Champion and men's winner of this World Cup, Australia's, Leif Selby. I gave the world champion a fight, in front of a large partisan crowd. My wife Mo was very proud. Still did not win though.

At the end of the tournament we had a reception where we got an engraved plate and medal. I tried to teach the word of bowls my "CAR DANCE" which went down well. I certainly made some new friends and Linda met with some of her old Friends from past tournaments.

To sum up, We had less games than planned, but no one can beat Mother Nature. Hopefully next year the competitors will get more games. However we both had a great experience and if I ever get the chance I would do it again.

ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009

Our journey began outside the Aliathon Holiday Village reception, fond farewells to take care and do well, and we were off. It was a long journey, overnight, stopping to change planes at Heathrow and arriving  at Johannesburg 9am. Unpacking must have been done in record time to get changed and on to the greens to find out what was in store for us. How heavy are these greens? A bit different from the carpet back home!

The Wanderers Club, where the Championships were held is quite something, four greens, very large clubhouse catering for many sports and activities, food, bar and social areas all contained within. With 16 countries represented, ten playing members and managers, there were a lot of old friends to meet and greet as well as the new faces who became friends for life.

Each Nation had been allocated a “host club” to look after us ,entertain us and be there for us, Cyprus had the Pirates Club, and what a wonderful bunch they turned out to be. They did admit they were a little bit concerned, Cyprus, will they be a load of old fogies, speaking Greek; what a shock they had?

At last the day has arrived, everyone had the proverbial butterflies, but” let the show begin”, as they say. Didn’t we look smart in our new kits, many compliments came our way and we certainly held our heads up high for the opening ceremony.

The first week saw the pairs and triples, with the singles and fours the second week, nothing to it, just go out there and play bowls; we are a tiny little country with nothing to lose, less than 350 members pitting our strength against Nations with hundreds to chose from! Usually there were two matches each day, and at the end of the first week, we ladies were doing pretty well, 5th in the triples and made the quarterfinal play offs in the pairs, that should give us a few points on the old leader board. The second week saw some good impressive bowling, enough for us to finish 5th and 6th respectively, how have we done? Yes, we have qualified for The World Championships in Australia 2012, all my ambitions fulfilled. Players and managers from a variety of Nations were there to congratulate us, “you girls played well”, “the score didn’t reflect the game”, “you have certainly handled the conditions well, coming from synthetic to grass” “well done you”. “Cyprus will be proud of you”. Unfortunately our men had a really hard time out there, the standard of bowls from their opposition certainly left them wondering what they had to do to get a win under their belts; something that they all felt would need to be addressed on their return.

All good things must come to an end, the closing ceremony, no medals, but we have qualified; the gala dinner finished a very enjoyable two weeks, and so to that long journey home.  Friendship, camaraderie, competitiveness, team Cyprus has certainly fulfilled all that it takes to be on the big scene of bowls, all from our little island in the Mediterranean.

ABERDEEN
Champion of Champions - Summer 2008

Undisputedly the top outdoor World Bowls Singles event.  Quote “ You are here not because your face did or did not fit, but because you earned the right to be here”.

Some 31 nations took part; some with both of their representatives others with only one player.

The day before the event started, Friday, was the official practice day and all nations took to the green for a full day to try all three greens. Saturday arrived, flags flying, a Scottish marching band, in full dress, lead us all around the perimeter in alphabetical order and we were then called on to the green with our Grampian junior bowler holding “Cyprus” in front of us; quite an emotional moment. With the usual speeches, the first bowl delivered the tournament got under way.

My observations at this point; How colourful the competitors looked, bedecked not only in their bowling gear but also their tracksuits. The dress code was very flexible and tracksuits were worn to play if desired. The majority of nations had managers with them.

Each nation had a “host” to look after them, usually a couple of members from a local bowls club. Their responsibilities were to meet and greet them at the airport, entertain them some evenings and generally to be the “gopher”.

At the end of the tournament a civic reception was held in the town hall, drinks, finger buffet, speeches and the presentation of a keepsake dominated the evening with fond farewells to old and new friends and many officials who participated during the week.

Overall the 10 days were a great success with a very efficiently run tournament, accommodation was very good and this event should certainly be considered as a worthy entry on the Cyprus International calendar.
