23rd January

A useful number of Aphrodite Club members turned up this morning to take advantage of one fine day to assist the Greenguage Boys in the laying of the new carpet. By 15.00 hrs, the complete carpet had been laid, old carpet had been laid on the green surrounds and all that remained to be done was the sticking of the ditch covering and surrounds. All in all, a very successful day which really does make the Aphrodite Club stand out. On Wednesday 25th the rinks will be measured and marked and all ready for competition by Thursday. The new green and surrounds will make a fitting venue for the Bowls Cyprus National Finals in May.

23rd December

Following on from the AGM, the new list of Council members and officers is available on the officers page.
The schedule for next year's Tens competition is on line on the Tens Page.

10th November

After some considerable time performing an excellent job in the post of Press and Publicity Executive Officer, Norris Forster has decided it is time to hang up his boots; Norris, it will be sad to lose you, and one hell of a job to replace you but whatever, on behalf of Bowls Cyprus, a very heartfelt thank you. Applications for the post by 15 December please.

11th October 2011

At a Domestic Match Committee meeting a number of matters were decided on which you may be interested in.

In the 10s competition starting in January, the triples will play 16 instead of 18 ends. This is an attempt to iron out a timing discrepancy in the matches as by adopting this measure it will mean that exactly the same number of bowls will be delivered as in the rinks. This is an experiment and applies only to the 10s matches.

A problem has come to light with reference to the ditches at the Avanti club. The ditches have been sanctioned by the national governing body but they do not meet international standards. This means that any build up matches to an international competition cannot be played at the Avanti green - in essence, this only means the men's and ladies 4 wood singles, the winners of which advance to the Champion of Champions competition. Accordingly, any 'challengers' in the BC Nationals from the Avanti Club will decide whether to play their 'home' match on their opponent's green or on a neutral green - the 'challenger' will also have to provide the marker at their opponent's green or on a neutral green.

Dutch Open Tournament

Notices advertising this event will be sent to club secretaries shortly

Please note that this is an open competition - anyone can enter.   Competitors will not be representing their home country

Please note that this competition may well conflict with the dates of our national finals on 3rd & 4th May 2011

CYPRUS BID FOR MAJOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

After a successful bid for the 2011 Atlantic Championships and awaiting the result of the bid for the 2012 Champion of Champions and to do so we have had to meet a strict criteria as laid down by World Bowls.

A large part of the responsibilities are being shouldered by the Constantiou Brothers and their hotels, The Athena Beach & The Athena Royal with their fantastic facilities. Without their backing we would not be in a position to consider bidding to hold such prestigious events.

Bowls Cyprus must be able to supply officials for both events:

  • Umpires
  • Markers
  • Team’s Coordinator

Umpires

At present the requirement will be for Umpires to be at National Level of which we will need 8, preferably 10, to enable us to cover days off for whatever reason. This autumn we will start the Umpires up-grading course. The intention is to have one day a week tuition on the theory, at the end of the course there will be a mock exam followed by the real thing, half a day refresher on the practical followed by the practical exam and an oral exam.

Markers

The requirements for markers cannot, at present, be finalised as the numbers vary at each event. However, going on past events we will need a minimum of 14 markers for the Atlantic, 20+ to allow for non-availability for whatever reason. The Champion of Champions requires about 12 markers, again 16+ for cover. Markers courses can be held on a more flexible basis and consists of a theory paper and a practical measuring exam. There will always be a minimum of 2 tutors on the course for help and guidance.
